I just loooooove the fact that the guest posts coming in right now are ones that make me think to myself, “Yup – I wish I wrote that. That belongs here. That’s gonna speak to My People (aka you).” And this one from Becca Tracey is no exception. Prepare yourself for a big a-ha moment and then some.
Notice I didn’t say “3 Simple Steps”. C’mon – Life Purpose is a BIG topic, right?
And if were THAT simple, the world would be free of people who are still searching for their purpose in life. And we all know that hasn’t happened (yet).
We all want to feel like we’re here for something greater. But often, we’re so stuck in our daily lives that we can barely see past how we’re going to make the rent, let alone change the world.
I get it. I really do. For most of my life, all I cared about was when my next big adventure was going to happen. What country I should head to next. Whether it was totally unreasonable to sell all my stuff (again), and take off for another year. Or two.
I worked my hardest to NOT work and still sustain the lifestyle I wanted. And I did a pretty good job of it, saving a bunch of money at once, and then adventuring for a while before coming back and repeating the cycle.
I wondered whether I would ever “settle down”. Whether this lingering Non-Conformist Bug I had would every go away.
I was told my lifestyle was unsustainable. I was told to grow up. I was told that some day, I’d have to get a real job with real responsibilities (because apparently my waitressing jobs were unworthy of being classified as “real.” Holy demeaning, right?)
I really believed in my way of life. I found myself constantly encouraging other people to get out of their boxes and live a little. People came to me for advice on travel. They always wanted to know how I could afford to go away so often, and didn’t I have a job to worry about? I would tell them my story, encourage them to take the leap, and help them feel like they could actually make it happen.
I loved my life, but secretly, I still felt a little lost. What the hell was I going to do when when I grew up, really?
With the help of some pretty gnarly life events, some awesome coaches, and a lot of introspection, I realized that my crazy unconventional life, the way I viewed the world, and how I made it feel easy to have the life I wanted – these were my gifts.
I never really saw it before. I didn’t realize the impact that my way of living had on the people around me. It inspired them. It excited them. It made them want more for their lives. I created this sense of adventure and freedom in them, and I was not even the slightest bit aware of it.
And therein lay my Life Purpose. To help people live remarkable lives, full of courage, adventure, freedom, and choice. And I could achieve this purpose by simply being MORE of what I already was (instead of shunning it, shaming it, or trying to change it to conform to what everyone else was doing).
It was there, in me, all along.
And to think I had been searching for some Holy Grail of a Purpose that I never felt I’d be able to measure up to, even if I did manage to find it.
It makes me laugh when I think about how blind I was to it.
And I am guessing, if you’re reading this, and you follow Michelle’s work, you have a bit of the same sense of “What the hell should I be doing with my life”.
So I am here to help make it a little easier on you. I’m here to tell you that it is in you already, even if you think you have no idea what the eff “it” is.
What are those 3 Simple-ish steps I mentioned? Here they are.
3 Simple-ish Steps to Finding Your Life Purpose
1. Pay attention.
Begin to notice what you LOVE. What you are naturally amazing at. Maybe you’re crazy awesome at connecting people – you know what everyone is up to, and you thrive when you get to introduce people to each other. Maybe you’re crazy organized, and you love routine, regimens, and the feeling of complete order. Maybe you have a way of making people around you feel at ease and totally comforted during tough times. Or maybe you’re not so sure what you’re really good at doing. You’re too close to it to even recognize it. So ask around. Hop onto Survey Monkey and ask the questions “What impact have I had on you” and “What are 3 words you would use to describe me”, and send it out to your 20 most trusted friends and family. You may just be shocked and delighted with what people see in you.
Trust that who you are now is enough. Trust that your Purpose can be as simple as simply stepping fully into being fully YOU, as you are now (no tweaks or modifications necessary). Trust that you were put here to impact the world in the exact way that you already impact the world. It’s time to OWN it. When you recognize the impact that you have on the people around you, it becomes less about you, and more about being of service. It takes the head-game out of trying to figure it all out, and it is WAY simpler than believing purpose has to be something holier-than-thou. Think about it. If you’re so naturally inclined to comfort people in grief, and you don’t act on this impulse because you don’t really recognize how important it is and what a difference you make, you’re robbing people of what you have to offer.
Once you’re clear on what your impact is, and you’re totally confident that it does, in fact, matter to the world, it’s time to be MORE of it. Be intentional with it. It might even be the foundation for your new creative career… you never know. 🙂 But what I am sure of is that it takes practice, practice, practice to fully step into being in line with your purpose. The more intentional you are with it, the clearer it becomes that this is exactly what you are meant to be doing with your life.
The more you tell the world that you have this gift, the more you share it with everyone around you, and the more you believe that it really does matter, the bigger impact you will have.
But most importantly, the more you can stop trying to complicate it, to make it harder than it is, the better. Doesn’t it feel incredibly freeing to know that you are living your Life’s Purpose right now?
Breathe a sigh of relief.
It doesn’t have to any harder than letting yourself just be You.
