Why did you decide to work with me, a creative career coach?
I had never considered starting my own business until I discovered online businesses… having gone to school for a very very long time for my degrees, I believed the only way to succeed was the traditional 9-5 route. Once I discovered the world of online businesses, I purchased a course from a well known source but didn’t follow through with creating a business or course of my own. The truth is, online businesses still seemed to be the new “get rich quick” schemes. I read a lot of “How To Make Your First 100K in 6 Months”, no experience necessary [articles]. There were a lot of blog posts, and webinars saying that you did not have to be an expert in what you were teaching to teach. I had a hard time with it, so I became discouraged.
I decided I wanted to talk to a real human, not a webinar where someone is trying to sell me something…. I can’t tell you how I found you, but your personality and story made you sound competent and truthful. I thought “if someone if going to tell it how it is, it will be Michelle.” I remember wondering how I could work with you, and you sent an email saying you had just celebrated a birthday and you wanted to share the love by helping others. You asked for some submissions and asked us to say what we needed help with, our goals, why we wanted to work with you, and how long. I was so surprised by the approach, but it seemed to follow the same lines of your honesty and true desire to help bring others up. I wrote my submission and got an answer almost immediately! I was so shocked because it felt like winning the lottery!
I quickly realized, I wanted to start a business but did not know what I could offer without sounding like a crook and did not know if I had enough experience to offer someone true help.
What were you doing work-wise when we started our sessions?
I was, (and still do) work for a Tech Fortune 500 company as a Program Manager and Analytics Ops Lead for our Leadership Development programs, both of which I also co-wrote and developed along with the assessments to measure their impact on our people’s leadership change.
I had not started my business, no page, no name. Just a few random ideas and a staggering amount of self-doubt.
What was your biggest takeaway from our time together?
There were so many! I could write a long book about them all, but in the interest of keeping this short and sweet – I realized that the passion driving me to build my business is FREEDOM. I want to have freedom to follow my passions (spending time with my dogs, riding my horse, going to on trips with my hubby, visiting family) and I want to empower and help other women realize and achieve the same freedom. The “how” is not as important… my WHY is what drives me. I never want a woman to feel stuck or that she can’t better herself, or that she has no options because she is a woman, or [doubt] some of the decisions she has made. I want to be a source of hope and help women who want to achieve whatever they dream of.
Was there anything else you tried to do as a career between the time we stopped our sessions and what you do for work now? If so, how did it inform your current business?
In the time we stopped our sessions, life has gotten in the way! I had found out I had to move to Italy, was given only 3 weeks to move out of my house, packed and shipped my house alone, moved into my in-laws home, figured out all the paperwork required for moving, had many life-crisis about work/life and everything else! All of this while working full-time at a job that requires constant travel….
I was able to put up my site, create an LLC, and essentially become ready for business by doing little by little. Mostly because even after our sessions were over, you would send me little emails asking how I was and reminding me that you were thinking of me. When I felt like the idea of owning a business was not a reality for me and I was too busy, and maybe I had dreamed it all, I would receive a little email from you filled with encouragement and light. Sometimes, I think you believe in me more than I do. You see my business as a success already – you see what can be, not what is at the moment….
What would you tell someone now that was in your shoes when we first started working together? What’s your best “tip” to allow them to make a grown-up living doing what they love?
Ha! Ok – tip number 1: Online businesses are not a scam. If you have put in the work, you have skills and experience and a passion for doing what you want to do then you will be successful. Also, treat your business as a business not a lottery… you will likely not make 100K in 6 months, but that is not the best measure for your business anyways. If you get into your business and remember your WHY then, think of how many lives you have impacted and how they are better because of you.

I am currently taking clients who want to hire me as their Project Manager to manage multiple projects and their team, and also those who want help setting up project management systems and don’t know where to start!
2018 I will focus only on my business as I will not be with my 9-5 any longer. So, I hope to expand my offerings depending on the needs of my clients!
