Who works with a coach?

Someone who wants to make a big life decision - like whether they're ready to accept that promotion. Other times, they're tired of their life going in one direction, and they're ready to make a change - like finding a career that they're passionate about. Other times they just went through a big life change and are ready to pick up the pieces, like starting to date after a divorce. Yet other people are just tired of their tried & true habits and are determined to make a change, like learning how to say "no" to reclaim their own time. Anyone can technically work with a coach. However, those that get the most out of coaching are those that are ready - and enthusiastic about - making some changes in their life.

What are the major differences between coaching and other disciplines?

Therapy focuses solely on the past, and how to overcome it in order to become a functional person. A consultant is an expert, who comes in to tell you how to "fix" your situation and then leaves. A mentor takes you under their wing and often gives advice based on their own experience. A coach, however, focuses only on the present and how it relates to the future. She knows that only the client is an expert on what is best for them, and does not bestow any guidance. Rather, the coach examines the situation, creates a plan of action, and works side by side with the client to create a solution using the client's knowledge and answers. A coach takes a functional person and helps to make them an extraordinary person.

How does coaching create better long-term results?

With the guidance of a good coach, you won't be given one-time-only advice that only applies to a specific situation. In fact, you won't be given any advice at all! Besides, who the heck am I to tell you what's right or wrong for you?

When you enlist the help of a coach, you enlist the support and guidance of someone that can uncover your life goals and values so that you can make decisions that best support them. Even if these goals and values change throughout your life, you will be equipped to make decision that are always in line with these priorities.

How long do your clients work with you?

The minimum I agree to work with clients is for 12 sessions over three or four months. Anything less ends up leading to sub-par results, so I'd feel guilty about taking your money! The one exception to this rule is for those clients that I've already worked with for at least 12 sessions, and have a "quick fix" problem that they would like help with. Please see my Services page for more info on this package.

How can coaching work effectively over the phone or via email?

Actually, coaching is most effective when it's not face-to-face, since I can't rely on any facial expressions or body language to convey any information. That leads to me asking questions that I might not have asked because I assumed you felt a certain way about something. And you know what happens when you assume (If you don't, just email me and I'll tell ya)!

Also, sessions via phone or email have a tendency to be more truthful than those that aren't, since you don't have to show your face while talking about personal matters. This usually leads to more open and honest conversations in a shorter amount of time.

What credentials do coaches have?

Since coaching is a relatively new profession, there are still some "coaches" that don't have a credential to their name! With the founding of the ICF, & the creation of coaching schools like ICA , there's no reason for a coach not to have professional training. Make sure to check the Better Business Bureau to ensure that past clients have been satisfied, as well as finding out that your coach is certified as such.
